FATTENED FOR MARRIAGE

THE “EUGENIC” BENINESE Forty-two “Nippys,” serving in the Vita-sun Cafe at Coventry Street Corner House listened to' a lecture on health by Sir William Arbuthnot Lane, president of the New Health Society, recently. “You are all at the best time of your lives. You are looking forward to getting married, and I hope you soon will. When you are married you will want to have healthy offspring and to keep your husbands healthy and contented. You cannot do that unless you are healthy yourselves, ’’ said Sir William. “The natives of Benin, in Africa, whom we hear described as savages, are far in advance of us eugenically. They put all their women into a place called the fatting-house before their marriage. There they receive the best of everything for three months. Compare that with our system, where people get married in the most casual way.”
