NEW GUINEA MANDATE
AUSTRALIA SATISFIES COMMISSION TRIBUTE PAID AT GENEVA By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Received 1.54 p.m. GENEVA, Thursday. The Australian Press representative at Geneva learns that Germany’s application for membership in the Mandates’ Commission will not arise till September. Theoretically, Germany has an equal right with any other member of the League to a seat on the commission, but in actual practice the League Assembly on its Council’s recommendation, must nominate a small commission, giving preefrence to countries actually operating mandates. Sir Joseph Cook submitted to the Mandates' Commission to-day a report regarding the administration of New Guinea. He was closely questioned by the commissioners in regard to finance, but thanks to the most recent memorandum on the subject from Australia, Mr. Cook was able completely to satisfy inquiries. The Commission paid a tribute to Australia for its public health efforts in New Guinea, and the manner in which the reports on native labour had been presented. Sir Joseph Cook reported the appointment of Mr. Peter MacGregor as Royal Commissioner to report on the goldfields in New Guinea. —A. and N.Z.
