IMPUDENT FRAUD

STRONG COMMENT BY COURT ONE MONTH IN GAOL (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. “He is prepared to consent to an order for £1 weekly,” stated Mr. T. Lucas, when Michael Lind appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., today on an order for separation, guardianship and maintenance in favour of his wife. “I will make an order by consent for £2 weekly,” said Mr. Wilson. Defendant was further charged with obtaining board on credit by fraudulent means, representing that money was due to him. Defendant stated he was out of work and took that action until such time as he was in work again, and able to pay. It was stated defendant was evidently a “bird of passage,” and there was no reliable information concerning his antecedents. He had no previous convictions. Mr. Lucas asked the magistrate to admit the defendant to probation. “This is a most impudent imposition,” commented the magistrate. “Defendant left a decent wife and family to run away w r ith another woman, and defrauded a hotelkeeper to the extent of £3O. It is disgraceful and not a for probation but punishment. He Is sentenced to one month’s imprison- ' ment with hard labour.”
