£560,220 A YEAR!

PETROL TAX RETURN Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. The conference of the South Island Progress Leagues decided yesterday to request the Government to abolish

tyre and motor-car taxes and impose a tax on motor spirit. Mr. S. B. Macdonald, of Otago, who moved the remit, said the present road tax and tyre tax were inequitable, especially to the farmer, who used his car only occasionally, and therefore got little value for the road tax. A petrol tax of 3d a gallon would return £ 560,220 a year, whereas last year the tyre tax had yielded £140,534 and the motor-car tax £228,000.
