OTAGO UNIVERSITY OVER £3,000 DOWN

COUNCIL CRITICISED Press Association. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The report of the treasurer of the Otago University shows a deficit for the year, over all departments, of £3,366. The actual debit of the medical schol was £4,272. The treasurer comments that with the council unwilling to adopt the system of estimates at the beginning of the year, and acceding to fresh demands during the year, the; debit next year, without further assistance, might well be £5,000. The treasurer further pointed out that adequate assistance from the Government should be forthcoming for recognised national schools. Quoting the commission’s statement, he says, “It is obviously unfair that the needs of a national school should be supplied in part from funds required for the maintenance of the local college, with which it happens to be connected.”
