A DIPLOMA COURSE IN HORTICULTURE
N.Z. INSTITUTE SCHEME AWAITING LEGISLATION Though the diploma in horticulture has been initiated by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, it will not come into operating, pending the passage of an Act through the present session of Parliament. Lectures have not yet been arranged for the candidates, but the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture has arranged with the City Council for the establishment of two cadetships for youths. The report presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Council last evening stated that another series of lectures would be given shortly. The report covered the work done in the botanic survey of the Dominion, the selection work of the citrus committee and the formation of a native plant committee. Nothing definite had been arrived at in the establishment of a botanic garden worthy of the city. It was decided to send a remit to the Dominion Conference suggesting that greater attention should be given to agriculture and horticulture in secondary schools. The election of officers resulted: — President, Professor H. H. Corbin; chairman, Mr. T. L. Lancaster; Dominion vice-president and vice-chairman of the council, Mr. D. Hay; committee, Professor W. Riddet, Messrs. W. S. Hill. E. W. Plummer, W. G. Wright, J. Hunter, R. G. Sharp, G. Archey, F. Carr Rollett, S. W. House and F. H. Leonard; secretary, Mr. N. R. W. Thomas.
