WOODEN BUILDING DESTROYED BY FIRE
SPECTACULAR BLAZE A two-storey building in Power House Lane, near the Farmers’ Trading Company, was destroyed by fire yesterday evening. The ground floor was used by Mr. G. Kennerley as a store for bottles, sacks and rope. Apparently it was in the office of this depot that the blaze started. Benzine was stored in the opposite corner to the office. The upper floor was occupied by Mr. G. E. Cluett, a reinforced concretemaker. Galvanised wire of a total weight of 4J tons used by Mr. Cluett in his business was stored in one corner The rafters still support the weight, though there is a noticeable sag. When the brigade was called out at 9.2 p.m. the dry wooden structure was burning furiously. A long lead of hose had to be run from Hobson Street. It was nearly half an hour before the fire, which at one time threatened two wooden houses nearby, was finally extinguished. Mr. Kennerley’s stock was insured for £l7O in the London and Lancashire Office, while a Ford ton-truck, which had the bodywork badly burned, was insured for £125 in the Insurance Office of Australia. The damage to both floors is not covered by the insurance.
