GRATITUDE
A LAD REMEMBERS HOW, j FIVE YEARS AGO, HIS i FEET WERE SAVED I i'
"A FINE SPIRIT” One day the Supreme Being took into His head to give a great feast in His azure palace. He invited all the virtues as guests. HE noticed two very beautiful ladies who apparently were entirely unacquainted with each other. The host took one of the ladies by the hand and led her to the other. “Beneficence,” he said, pointing to the first. “Gratitude,” he added, pointing to the second. The two virtues were unspeakably astonished; ever since the world had existed —and it has existed a long time —they had never met before. —IVAN S. TURGANIEV. But five years ago a lad of nine was admitted to the Auckland Hospital suffering from badly crushed feet. There seemed then to be a probability that he would live his life as a shocking cripple. He was attended by Dr. Milsom and almost complete recovery was his fortune, after two periods in the hospital. A short time ago Dr. Milsom received a letter. Dear Doctor, — I don’t suppose you remember the writer, bu. . it.-.-iiuer you, well. The lad, now a youth of 15 years, thanked Dr. Milsom for his part in saving him from life in a wheel chair — thanked him that he was now able to take part in the sports and play of other youths. In his holidays the thankful boy had gone to work digging potatoes, end £5, the first money he had ever earned, he forwarded to the doctor who had -saved his feet. Dr. Milsom forwarded the -money to the Auckland Hospital Board. It has been decided to buy a wheelchair for the Children’s Hospital with the money and to write thanking the lad for his fine spirit of gratitude.
