Burglar Owns Up to Jewel Robbery
DANNEVIRKE £2,000 “JOB” COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Wednesday. William Guthrie Smith, aged 21, appeared before Justices of the Peace this morning to answer a charge of having on February 2, 1927, broken and entered the shop of Stubbs and Millar, at Dannevirke, and stealing a number of gold and jewelled rings, one gentle - man's silver wristlet watch, and £lO 30s in money, of a total value of £2,653 9s. The accused made a confession, admitting having done the “Job” himself. He detailed how he had stolen a key and burgled the safe, his subsequent departure to Sydney, where he was arrested while trying to dispose of part of the proceeds. Smith pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
