TAMAKI’S DECISION MAJORITY OF 688 VOTES CITY’S INCREASED AREA "THAT amalgamation is the obvious form of unity” is evidently the slogan adopted by Tamaki ratepayers, who, by a margin of 688 votes, decided yesterday to join up with Auckland City. HPHE voting was 894 for the proposal and 206 against. In only one booth —Tamaki—did the opposition vote outnumber that of the supporters of the amalgamation proposals. There, £0 votes were recorded for the proposal and 45 against. Details of the voting are as follow:

With the addition of the Tamaki Road District, including the Orakei district, Auckland City, which at present consists of 8,584 acres, will be increased to 14,974 acres. It is now the second largest in area of the four cities, Wellington still being the largest with 16,288 acres, Dunedin third with 14,577 acres, and Christchurch fourth with 10,660 acres. The addition of Tamaki’s 3,453 inhabitants raises the city’s population from 87,829, to a‘total of 91,282. At the last census Wellington City had a population of 97,986.
