HARBOUR BOARD

The Auckland Harbour Board met 3'esterday afternoon the chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, presiding. The Railway Department’s offer to rent the gridiron site at Onehunga, at £1 a year, was accepted by the board, the engineer to make a report on the cost of repairs. The board will ‘'consider in committee the request of the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades Unions asking if the board would agree to a private agreement with its employees, coming within the scope of the general engineers’ award, on similar lines to the agreement with the City Council Tramway Department. Robert Millar and Co. wrote on behalf of the master of the Maryland, thanking the harbournfaster. Captain H. H. Sergeant, for his assistance when the vessel broke adrift at Chelsea. Notice was given that F J. Evans intended to take action against the board regarding the sale of a case of super-carburettors. The secretary stated that every endeavour had been made to find the owner of the super-carburettors before they were sold by the board. A letter had been forwarded to Mr. Evans but it had been returned. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that the board decline to admit liability. It was stated that in future drivers' licences and vehicle permits will be issued by the traffic manager on behalf of the board. The engineer reported that during the period ended June 14 0,530 cubic yards of sandstone had been dredged from the area between Prince’s Wharf and the Western Wharf, and dumped on the outer arm of the boat harbour breakwater; that 10 piles of the new Devonport wharf have been concreted, leaving only 11 to be done; ant that the flagstaff at South Head, Manukau, had been completed. _ . In reply to the request of J. J. Craig for assistance in repairing the company’s sand wharf, east of Kings Wharf, it was stated that the board was unable to accede to the request, but that the company would have the first consideration to the site when the licence expired. Regarding the Deautifying of tne park at the entrance to the Birkenhead Wharf, by improving the boat lockers on the breastwork, it was decided to reply that the board will request all tenants of boatsheds to paint their sheds a uniform colour, the colour to be suggested by the tenants, and that in future all applicants for boatshed sites submit a plan of the building for the approval of the board.
