MOTOR STRIKES BRIDGE

While driving a motor van loaded with milk from Manurewa to Auckland, Air. W. LI. Smith misjudged the entrance to the bridge over the railway line at Papatoetoe at 4 a.m. this morning in the dense fog. He struck the concrete buttress of the bridge, and was only saved from a disastrous drop on to the railway line 20 feet below by the wire fence protecting the approach. Had the wire given way the consequences must have been serious. The steering-gear of the car was damaged and the front axle bent, and the vehicle had to be towed to the garage.
