THE BURNING QUESTION”
COAL AND ITS FUTURE ADDRESS TO BUSINESS MEN “The Burning Question,” Mr. S. I. Crookes, A.M.1.E.E., nicknamed his address on “Coal and Its Future Possibilities,” to the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society at a luncheon yesterday. How can raw coal be replaced by a smokeless fuel obtained from coal? How can sufficient oil fuel for the navy and fuel for the air services be obtained from coal? These two questions were dealt with by Mr. Crookes. “Be cautious,” was his advice in regard to investment in processes for obtaining wonderful products from coal. If he read the signs aright such proposals would be before investors before long. Much of the valuable products of coal were not utilised in ordinary domestic consumption and it was hoped by research to use these factors. To obtain a free-burning coke was the aim of fuel scientists of the day. The greatest work being done was being carried out in the fuel research station at Greenwich, under Dr. Lander.
