PILLAGERS CAUGHT
CARGO THEFTS ADMITTED WATERSIBERS REMANDED August, 1926, till June of this year, John Wallace Thurlow and Lewis Robert William Knight, both aged 25, pillaged cargo while working on the waterfront. The loot, for the most part, consisted of soap and face cream, but there was one big haul of silk. The men appeared before Mr. W. ft. McKean, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, and pleaded guilty to a long list of charges. Chief-Detective J. Cummings said that the total value of the goods stolen by Knight was £B. Thur'low’s thefts amounted to £ll 11s 7d worth of goods. The chief-detective mentioned that 270 yards of silk had been pillaged from a special cargo, and the accused were charged with stealing 40 yards of this., Mr. J* J. Sullivan said that both the men were married with children. “Thefts from the waterfront are serious,” said Mr. Sullivan, “but they are no more serious than theft from anywhere else. These men, because of their crime, are automatically struck off the waterside workers’ roll, and are driven, therefore, into the ranks of the unemployed. The accused were convicted and discharged on all charges but one. On that, they were remanded, for sentence in a week’s time, and ordered to remain in custody.
