STORM AT OPOTIKI

A heavy south-easterly windstorm swept the Opotiki district yesterday. Many trees were blown down and branches torn off others. Farmers had a busy time repairing haystack covers, which suffered badly from the wind. Electric power was cut off at mid-day and repairs were not effected till four in the afternoon. Telegraphic communication has been interrupted between Opotiki and Motu. Messrs. E. Wrigley and R. McllWraith had a narrow escape while motoring yesterday. A large willow tree crashed down on the road, almost striking the vehicle. The weather was bitterly cold throughout the day and heavy rain fell.
