FIRE IN SHIP'S HOLD
Flames Extinguished By Cable. — Press Association. —Copyright AMSTERDAY, Monday. The steamer Essen, bound from Australia to Hamburg, arrived at Amsterdam with a fire burning in No. 3 hold. " The blaze has now been extinguished. It is surmised that the fire started in the copra cargo. Openings were cut in the side of the vessel to allow of the passage of water, but the heavy list prevented the flooding of the hold. —A. and N.Z. The Essen is a steel screw steamer of 5,158 tons. She belongs to the GermanAustralian Steamship Line and was built in 1923 at Hamburg by Blohm and Voss.
