MOTTO FOR SPECULATORS

At the Ellerslie race meeting recently it was a noticeable factor that hundreds of people were shut out of the machine when endeavouring to make their investments, and again at Alexandra Park on Saturday many failed to get to the windows ! time. While no doubt in many instances the speculators were fortunate in saving their money the position was unsatisfactory both to themselves and the club providing the thrilling sport. The loss of revenue on the machine was not due in any way to the totalisator staff, but the fault lay with investors, many of whom appear to have got into the bad habit of waiting till the last minute before visiting the machine to purchase their tickets. There is invariably a rush to be on something at the last moment, and naturally in the crush a great number get left. “Delay is dangerous” and “he who hesitates, is lost” are two axioms that ■*'.e speculative public could well keep in mind when visiting Alexandra Park to-morrow and if the moral was made applicable personally there would not be *so manv tales of “what might have been” recited after each race. There is ample time between the events for the public to inspect the horses, come to a decision and get their tickets, without waiting for a final crush and perhaps missing the bus.
