STRAND
HUMPHREY BISHOP CO. The Humphrey Bishop Company, well-known to Aucklaifd theatregoers, is now drawing large audiences to the Strand Theatre. The programme consists of selected items from the extensive new repertoire, and is presented twice daily, in addition to the film programme, the company occupying the stage for an hour and a-quarter at each performance. Delightful humour and clever comedy, and a variety of vocal and instrumental numbers all find place on the programme. The comedy side of the performance is in the capable hands of “Scratcher” Ross and Charles Albert, who present attractive sketches. Artistes who are appearing before Auckland audiences for the first time include the noted Lancashire comedian, Arthur Heinsley, Betty Burt, solo dancer, and Joyce Staff, comedienne. Allan Kitson and Elaine Maye give demonstrations of the latest dancing features, while vocal items are rendered by the well-known baritone, Walter Kingsley, Thelma Trott, soprano, and John Montfort, tenor. Orchestral music is provided by the Strand Symphony Orchestra, augmented by the Humphrey Bishop Company’s musicians. Conrad Nagel’s dereliction from the fields of romantic heroism for whimsical comedy is obviously pleasing to the crowded houses at the Strand Theatre, where the new Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer picture, “There You Are,” is being screened. Nagel appears as the star of this frothy comedy, which tells a swiftly-moving story of an eloping couple pursued by parents and police, and beset with tangled identities, a misplaced baby, and other woes innumerable and comical. Edith Roberts portrays the main feminine part in “There You Are,” which was adapted from the novel by F. Hugh Herbert, the noted English author. George Fawcett, Gwen Lee, Phillips Smalley and Eddie Gribbon are also in the cast.
