A Bad Time To Commit Theft
CRIME TOO PREVALENT TWO YEARS’ HARD LABOUR “This is a bad time to commit theft; the crime is too prevalent,” remarked His Honour, Mr. Justice Reed, in sentencing Cecil Mark Brown to two vears’ imprisonment The prisoner stated that he had been out of work for some time and had called to see the person from whom he had stolen the articles about obtaining employment. When he arrived at the place the gentleman was out, and he had yielded to sudden temptation in order to obtain food for his wife and family. . His Honour said that after perusing prisoner’s record he found he was unable to accept his statement. “I find that ever since you came out of gaol some years ago you have led a self indulgent life,” said His Honour. “You have be€*n drinking and frequenting hotels and apparently worrying very little about your wife and family. “Unfortunately for you, you have committed this offence at a time when this class of crime is prevalent. Under the circumstances I cannot sentence you to less than two years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
