He had been ailing for a few weeks, and the illness took a turn yesterday that terminated fatally. The late Mr. Olliver was one of the best known sporting journalists in the Dominion, and at the time of his demise was editor of the “New Zealand Referee,” a position he had held for the past 18 months. As a young man Mr. Olliver joined the staff of the “Referee,” and his service with that journal, the official organ of racing and trotting, lasted in all a period of 28 years. Extremely popular with his fellow journalists and officials of racing and trotting clubs, the death of Mr. Olliver will leave a gap that will be found exceedingly difficult to fill. He was present at the last summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, but even at that juncture he was not in the best of health. The sympathy of all sporting folk will be extended to the bereaved widow and family.
