GARAGE GOSSIP
Mr. A. S. Burgess, managing director of Messrs. .A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd., is in Auckland at present in connection with the shift to new premises. * * * Mr. F. G. Farrell, president of the Auckland Motor Traders’ Association, has returned from the South, after accompanying the British Motor Trade Delegation. * * * Mr. J. Lang, manager for Auckland for Dominion Motors Ltd., who has been out of town on business, has now returned. * * * Mr. F. C. Allen, representative of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Akron, U.S.A., was a visitor to Auckland during the week. Mr. Allen is a special overseas marketing representative and has been stationed in New Zealand for two or three years past watching the affairs of hi® company. Messrs. P. B, Whyte and Co. are shifting their garage to new premises in Customs Street East. * m * The fire alarm to Rush ton’s Garage, Albert Street, last Friday, was little more than a false alarm, as nothing more than a wooden staircase at the back was scorched, and this was out before the brigade got there. ROADS AND COUNCILS The Newmarket Borough Council is considering the creation of a traffic outlet to relieve the congestion existing, in Broadway. The matter is under consideration by the engineer and traffic inspector. At the Takapuna Council meeting last Wednesday evening, estimates for completion of road works were submitted by the engineer as follow: Walters Hill £3,121, King Edward Avenue £3,321, and Northcote Road to Sherriff’s Bridge £12,928. At a meeting of the One Tree Hill Road Board last Tuesday evening the inspector was authorised to prosecute offenders who park vehicles without lights on the grass at the sides of the roads. Although it has been held in the past that these cars are out of the way of traffic, the chairman said the by-laws had to be complied with. A warning issued by the Auckland Automobile Association that the corner of Rosebank Road and Great North Road, Avondale, is dangerous, has had ample fulfilment. A collision occurred there one morning last week, between two motor-cars, with the result that a car owned and driven by Mr. T. Lindsay Scott, of Turua, was considerably damaged. Public opinion is that the Avondale Borough Council should erect a silent policeman on the corner. ■it * * A committee of Rotorua borough councillors recently motored through the Mamaku Bush Road, and were able to report this important highway to be in a better condition than it has; been in any previous year. With proper care the road will be negotiable all through the winter, and no one need be deterred from making the trip. A total length of not more than 150 yards may occasion temporary difficulty should protracted spells of very wet weather occur. This particular section will receive every attention. Motorists who are out late at night will be pleased to hear that all-night lighting in the streets of local bodies deriving their power from the Waitemata Electric-Power Board will be encouraged in the future. • * ♦ A scheme is on foot to put the Wha-ngarei-Onerahi Road maintenance on a sound footing. Mr. J. E. Holmes, chairman of the Onerahi Town Board, 'suggests that legislation, similar to the Hutt Road Amendment Act. 1917, be promoted to erppower the imposition of a local tax on motor vehicles for the purposes of establishing a fund to finance, in conjunction with the Main Highways Board, the construction and maintenance of the main roads converging on Whangarei. A conference has been held and was attended by Mr. Allen Bell. M.P., who has promised to assist the local bodies. The borough engineer reported to the Takapuna Council last Wednesday that the East Coast Road would cos* £2,000 more to complete than was stated in past proposals. At the same meeting an offer was received from Mr. W. R. Wilson, on behalf of himself and others, giving an area at the corner of Jutland Road and Stone Street to allow an easier turn of the roadway. The offer was received with thanks. High Cost of Ignorance. —Senior: “What will it cost me to have my car fixed ?” Garageman: “What’s the matter with it?’’ Senior: “I don’t know.’’ Garageman: “Fifty-two dollars and sixty cents." —Yale •Record.’’
