JAPANESE FORCES MOVE IN CHINA
NORTHERNERS STILL HELD HANKOW THREATENED By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright SHANGHAI, Friday.. Reports show that the tide of battle is continuing to be unfavourable to the Northerners. A declaration by Chang Tso Lin that he cannot guarantee the safety of Japanese residents has resulted in 1,500 additional Japanese troops being dispatched to Tsinan, and reinforcements from the Sasebo naval base are mobilising. It is reported that as a result of the threatening situation, Hankow is gradually being surrounded by adherents of Chiang Kai Shek, with the object, it is believed, of ousting the Reds. The majority of the Hankow forces are returning from the Honan Province to defend the seat of the Borodin Government. Feng Yuh Siang is assuming control of the evacuated territory, and there are frequent clashes between the soldiers and police. At Hankow, typhus has broken out among the wounded, who refuse to be quarantined.
