WORKERS’ WELFARE

A £200,000,000 SCHEME Sir Arnold Gridley, a leading figure in the British electrical industry, has outlined a scheme for ending industrial disputes, and promoting goodwill and co-operation among all classes. “My proposal,” said Sir Arnold, “is that a Government Bill should be introduced to establish a National Commonwealth Fund, the proceeds of which would be devoted to: Clearing slum areas. Building for wage-earners houses to be let at rentals not too high for them to pay. Augmenting existing rates of unemployment pay, sickness benefit, accident insurance and old age pensions. Aiding emigrants to any part of the Empire. He suggested a national loan amounting to £200,000,000 on a 5 per cent, basis, the interest charge to fall upon the nation.
