WHALE ISLAND

It is not generally known that there is thermal activity on Whale Island—where eight persons were recently marooned through the launch Scout breaking away. Questioned about this matter by THE SUN correspondent, Mr. King, one of the members of the missing party, stated that there are several steam vents and other signs of activity on the island. By digging into the sand on the seashore it is possible to get hot water.

The islands where the missing launch was * eventually found are commonly called the Raurimu Islands. According to Mr. V. Savage, an authority on Maori, this is not correct. The real name of the islands is Rurima, the meaning being “five earthquakes.” According to tradition, five earthquakes caused the islands, hence the name.
