METER RENT

ABOLISHED IN WHANGAREI (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. At the special meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council held on Friday evening the Mayor’s policy of abolishing the meter rent caused a good deal of discussion. The Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brake, quoting the by-law on the subject, said he thoughtthe rental should be abolished, but he did not wish the by -law repealed until after the end of the financial year so as not to cause embarrassmen to the electrical engineer’s department. Between £7,000 and £B,OOO had been transferred from electricity profits to the roads last year without incurirng rates, and enough revenue was being made td warrant a saving to consumers by doing away with the rental of the meters. Discussion was rife for over an hour at the end of which time the motion was put, those voting for being the Mayor. and Crs. Moore, Meikle, Brainsby and Tibbits, and against Crs. Jack, Nelson, Pickmere, Rush and Curtis. The Mayor then gave his casting •vote for the proposals
