COSGRAVE MUST CARRY ON
IRISH POLITICAL CRISIS A TANGLED SITUATION Received 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Friday. JT is persistently reported in the Dial Eireean lobbies that despite the contention of Mr. W. T. Cosgrove, President of the Irish Free State, that the onus of carrying on rests with the opposition some other party on Tuesday will nominate him to the Presidency to enable him to form a Ministry.
The President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, Mr. W. T. Cosgrave, announced to-night
that he will not form a Government owing to his party being in a minority. Mr. Cosgrave says he is taking the attitude that those who were in opposition to him in the last Dail Eireann, meaning the Labour Farty and other groups, _ are now in a majority. while his own party is in a minority. The President adds that if he formed a Government his action would be tantamount to the usurpation of the rights of the Dail. “The deputies supporting me will never take the oath of allegiance,” asserts Mr. de Valera, leader of the Republicans. “We give allegiance to the Irish nation and people only. The people will insist on the speedy abolition of the degrading penal bath which disfranchises one-third of the electorate.”
.Eighty-eight candidates at the elections forfeited their deposits of £IOO as .they failed to secure a third of the .vote recorded.—Sun.
