FROM MY WINDOW
GAUNT stacks of,masonry thrust their strength into the night, dark and mysterious like sleeping giants. "i ellow eyes of electric light stab the gloom and throw into bold relief blank vails and stiff branches of trees. Beyond the harbour are strings of lights that are Devonport and North Shore, shining through the dim, blue night like fairy lanterns in a picture by Dulac. Noiseless as phantoms the ferry boats flit across the dark harbour waters, skimming like fireflies and reflecting their swift beauty in spiral flame that lingers only for an instant, then passes on. From a black patch between the gaunt buildings comes the roar of escaping steam or the angry coughing of restless engines in the station yard. Flecks of light catch the wreaths of steam as. a train goes by and disappears into the night. It is never still, that station, yard, but it cannot spoil the fairy fantasy which is Auckland Harbour from my window at night. * —G.
