NAVY NAMES. Just as there are family names that recur, from generation to generation, in naval records, so there are names of ships in the Navy List which recall memories of men-o’-war that won glory »r the days of Nelson. Very often, too, the names of hisi Majesty’s ships run in classes. For instance, the Admiralty has just christened four new g • boats—the first to be built since the war—and has given them all bird-names—Gannet, Petrel, Seamew, and Tern. The last lot of gunboats bore inseet--ttr.es, such as Cockchafer. One of the newgunboat names, Petrel, iates back to 1777 and Gannet to 1800. Tern, however, is new, and Seamew is a junior name, no mao* n’-war having i before 1857
