THE TROTTING QUEEN
Escapade, the brilliant trotting daughter of Nelson Bingen and Country Belle, has set a standard of efficiency for the square* gaited fraternity that will take a lot of overhauling. When Reta Peter and Whispering Willie, two of the greatest exponents of the true gait that ever graced a race track, put up the excellent time of 4.28 2-5, the trotting world marvelled, and the opinion was generally expressed that the figures had come to stay. But in trotting as in other departments of life, evolution plays its part, and the successful mating of the American-bred Nelson Bingen with that great mare Country Belle, resulted in Escapade being produced to make turf history. The mare early showed promise, and as time went on she became a power to be reckoned with in the lightharness world. This year Berry not only succeeded in winning the big Easter Handicap at Christchurch with the mare, but in gaining the victory Escapade shattered the previous trotting record for the Dominion over two miles by tramping 4.27 1-5. The daughter of Nelson Bingen has justly earned the aopellation of “the trotting queen.”
