A NICE PRESENT
LABOUR MINISTER'S £23 CIGARETTE CASE In New Zealand gold keys are prej sented to Ministers who open new j buildings. In England the taxpayers sometimes pay for expensive presents j in another form. A gold cigarette case, presented to the Labour Minister of Transport, Mr. Harry Gosling, in 1924, in connection j.with the opening of a road, was one j of a number of items to which the district auditor called attention in his report to Durham County Council fur that year. The auditor allowed £24! spent on opening the East Coast Hoad, including £23 for the gold cigarette case, but added that it was questionable whether the presentation and entertainment were proper aubI jects for public expenditure.
