OLD FIRM LIQUIDATES
SMEETONS, LTD. HIGH RENTS AND WAGES After a trading life of over 20 years, the well-known firm of Smeetons, Ltd., is to go into voluntary liquidation. This decision was arrived at at the annual meeting of the compainy and will come before a special meeting of shareholders for confirmation on July 4. Several factors contribute to the decision. The rental of the premises has become prohibitive, and, according to the chairman of directors, Mr. W. M. Commons, the wages fixed by the Arbitration Court for the employees also make profitable trading difficult. Apart from this, business in groceries has been leaving Queen Street for some years, and the character of the trade has changed. As there is a large stock to be cleared, and the lease has five years to run, the company may be compelled to continue until the end of the term unless the lease can be disposed of. Smeetons, Ltd., was founded by Mr. H. M. Smeeton.
