POTATO MARKET SLIGHTLY EASIER
POSITION IN THE SOUTH AUCKLAND BUYING LESS <Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH:, Friday. General trade during the past week has, with the exception of wheat and to less extent potatoes, been inactive. In the two excepted lines there has been a “flutter.” Potatoes have been firm, but the market is now a shade easier on the week. Auckland came temporarily on the market for prompt shipment. Whereas June supplies sold during the last, few days at £4 5s a ton on trucks or £ 5 s 7 6d f.0.b.5.i., they are now selling at £ 5 5s with no buyers. July-August and September shipments which were being quoted at £ 6 10s f.o.b.s.i. are now being quoted at £6 7s 6d. Offerings from the growers continue to be very light, and farmers are more disposed to sell portion of their holdings than the lot. The tendency for supplies in the stores to increase may be explained by rejections for undersized and frosted tubers. Auckland’s requirements at this time of the year are usually 7,000 or 8,000 sacks per week, whereas this year Canterbury is only sending about 4,000 sacks a week. The Waipiata sailed on Wednesday with 2,300 Christchurch sacks, which* total was brought up to 3,000 by Timaru and other consignments. Steady consignments in limited quantities are going forward to the smaller North tlsland ports. The demand in Wellington for Dakotas finds short supply, and whites are being inquired for more freely. The value of Dakotas is £6 on board as against whites at £ 5 ss. In a normal season the red variety are 5s to 10s a ton below whites.
