LADIES’ GOLF TITLE
WON BY VISITOR MRS. DEIGHTON OFF FORM Mrs. R. S. Deighton, the j only Aucklander left to try and keep the Ladies’ Provincial Golf Championship in Auckland, been able to produce the form of Thursday, when she defeated Misses Chrystall and Culling, the very large gallery which followed the final at Middlemore yesterday afternoon, would have been treated to a fine battle. Mrs. Deighton did so » however, and as a result Mrs. Shailer Weston, of Wellington, scored a signal victory by 7 up and 6 to play. The two started away with perfect drives, but were both wide with their seconds, Mrs. Deighton being bunkered, and a half in five resulted. The tragedy, so far as Mrs. Deighton was concerned, started at the next hole, where she half hit her drive, and topped the third, Mrs. Weston winning in 5 to 6. The third saw Mrs. Deighton with the longer drive, and Mrs. Weston gave her a chance by fluffing her second, a chance that was not accepted, and, Mrs! Deighton taking three putts, Mrs. Weston became 2 up. Following this Mrs. Deighton topped her second at the fourth, and her tee shot at the fifth, her third at the latter hole finding the river, while Mrs. Weston got a 5 at the fourth, and was lying two feet from the. pin at the-fifth for a perfect four. Once again at the sixth Mrs. Deighton put her second a few yards, but got out of it with a five, and a half, per medium of a brilliant third, Mrs. Weston beingweak with her approach. Halves in fours at the short hole followed, and the next saw still another topped tee shot from Mrs. Deighton, Mrs. Weston nearly holing out her approach, and winning in four to follow with a perfect five at the long hole, and turn six up. The short tenth was poorly played, and a stymie robbed Mrs. Deightori of any chance for a half, and the next was halved in perfect fours. A brilliant four at the 12th saw the end of a most disappointing match. TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES The final was followed by the presentation , of prizes, and the closing of the tournament. It ranks as Pne of the most successful that the Auckr land Ladies’ Club has yet held, the links being in excellent condition, with one op two exceptions, due to the heavy rain of last week, and the weather leaving nothing to be desired—which was decidedly not the case last. year. The management was excellent, and the credit for this naturally goes to the secretary, Miss N. MacCorrriick, who was assisted by the club captain, Miss J. Reid, and Mr. A. E. M. Rhind : secretary of the men’s club. The prizes were presented by Mrs. T. C. Savage, president of the club, and the visitors’ thanks were conveyed by Miss Ward, of Wellington.
