RAILWAY CLERK CHARGED WITH THEFT
AUCKLAND ARREST DEPARTMENTS LOSSES When a railway clerk appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning on a charge of stealing a sum of money from the Railway Department, Chief-Detective J. Cummings said that there were numerous other charges pending. rpHE clerk was Gilbert Michael Joseph McGrath, aged 33. He was arrested yesterday afternoon at Auckland.
This morning McGrath appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., on a charge of stealing the sum of £8 16s from the Railway Department at Ohakune.
The chief detective, in asking for a remand to appear at Wanganui on June 24, made the statement about other charges pending. For some months past the auditors of the Railway Department have been on a tour of inspection of the various offices throughout the district. McGrath had been employed at Ohakune before he came on to Auckland.
