One-Day Meeting of Napier Park

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME DISCUSSED

Napier Park Racing Club icill hold its one-day winter meeting a.t Greentneadows to-morrow, and for the seven events on the programme the acceptances are fair . The form should serve as an excellent guide to the three days racing at Hastings next week.

/"\F recent years racing at Greenw meadows has lost a great deal of its glamour, and the Napier Park Club has been up against it, more often than not the totalisator returns showing substantial decreases. With one or two small fields to-morrow it is quite possible that the club will experience another set-back. The going at this course is usually good, being located as it is on reclaimed sandy land, so unless rain falls the track should Jbe in excellent order. The jumps are not solid, but they take negotiating, if one may judge by past experiences. The principal event to-morrow is the Napier Steeplechase, run over three miles, and with but six acceptors, four of which figure in a prior race, it is going to be a poor sort of an affair. A start is to be made with the MOTEO HACK HURDLES Of ISOsovs.; miles.

The topweight has had a few races over the battens, and at his second attempt lie scored. That was at Woodville. Lombardo is a useful sort, and Great Day should be a fine hurdler. This marks his first effort in public. Peshwa has been racing fairly well, and of the lower weights the prospects of Arataura and Mountain Top are preferred. It is not an easy race to sum up, for there appears to be nothing outstanding. The most favoured on the course may be Peneus, Peshwa and Great Day. The jumpers will again have a say in the second race, which is the PETANE HACK STEEPLECHASE Of 150sovs.; 2 miles.

Thirteen remain in, and with a knowledge of what is to be reserved for the big event the task of backers would be made easier. Little River, Crowfi Coin, Waioeka Jack and Woden claim dual engagements, but the last-

named will probably start here. Outside of those mentioned they are an indifferent lot, the exceptions being perhaps Merry Singer, Rangi Sarto and Kirkwood. Given a run here it is likely that backers will go for Waioeka Jack and Little River. The hacks come next, in the MEEANEE HACK HANDICAP Of 12550v5.; 5 furlongs

Nastori has a very big weight under the high scale, and although she can go a hot five furlongs, the winner may come from further down the list. Coot and Essential are in good fettle, and so. too, are Inner Harbour, Arrov Boy and Green Grocer, the last named no doubt being more forward now than when raced last. Nastori, A row Boy and Coot promise to be in the minds of most backers. The principal jumping event follows : NAPIER STEEPLECHASE Of 25050v5.; 2\ miles.

Kovno .... 9 0 It is on the cards that V ” 'ld will be limited to three or four, and this is not to be wondered at when the poor stake is considered. Bonny Rill will no doubt be the firm favourite, for she ran Maunga to half a length at Wanganui, and the latter subsequently finished second to Beau Caralier in the Great Northern. Crown Coin will be suited by the distance and if he fences at all well he »7ill make the favourite do her be«t throughout. Little River, Woden and Waioeka Jack are more likely to take on the hack event, and this leaves Kovno to complete the field. The named is a good jumper. Sonny Rill (H. Gordon) and Crown Coin (R. F.. Thomson) will dispute favouritism. The next event is the amateurs’ race, the LADIES' BRACELET Of lOOsovs.; li miles.

are two that appear to stand out. and they are Brigadier Bill and Royal Diadem, that is provided l hey are fairly well served by the gentlemen riders. Last year Royal Diadem won this race, but was subsequently disqualified on account of short weight. There are others ;n the contest, notably the two top weights, «r.d yet backers. will no doubt eize upon Brigadier Bill and Royal Diadem. There are some good iinilers engaged in the STEWARDS’ HANDICAP Of 17550v5.; 1 mile.

cap, and he was recently under offer at a moderate figure. He is in good nick, and may be one of the hardest to dispose of. Mint Leaf has a chance, despite previous failures, and then there are Royal Diadem, Buoyant, Hathor, Huikai and Road Hog, all fair sorts. Possibly the favourites will be Rascal and Elucyant. The one-day fixture concludes with the SETTLERS’ HACK HANDICAP Of 12550v5.; 7 furlongs

Kilmezzo won at Otaki, and Merle also showed good form, there. Grand National is a good hack, if a bit unlucky in some of his outings, and so, too, is Calluna, this pair being bracketed unless one has re< ntly changed hands. Coot has a prior engagement, and of the other quartette, Highway, Heather Blend arid the imported Pmerenzo (who was backed to win at Wairaiapa at Easter in his first appearance and was beaten by bad luck), should race well. Grand National, Merie and Kilmezzo will be the wellfancied division. Horses engaged to-morrow that were successful at this fixture twelve months ago a.r* Bonny Rill, Watchman. Brigadier Bill and Kirkwood.
