SUPERIOR TROTTERS

For some years past expert members of the square-gaited fraternity have exhibited a tendency to tackle the pacers in some of the richest handicaps in the Dominion, and in several instances the result has demonstrated marked ability on the part of the trotter. Reta Peter and Whispering Willie are two excellent illustrations of the superiority of representatives of the unhoppled division over their strapped associates. The season now drawing to a close has furnished further proof of the capabilities of dress circle trotters when opposed to a team of pacers, and the remarkable performance of Escapade at the Addington Easter gathering, despite the fact of the break at the post, will long be remembered by followers of the sport throughout the Dominion. Only last Saturday another striking example of a trotter exerting superiority over a hoppled contingent was witnessed, when Peter Swift led the way to the judqe in the principal event on the Ashburton card. The fight is on all right between the trotters and pacers and will be continued to-morrow at Alexandra Park, when Napland and Peterwah will take on Terence Dillon, Cardinal Logan, Peter Binaen and Co. Of the square-qaited pair, Peterwah looks the most likelv to upset the calculations of the oacinq fraternity, and Mr. Fisken’s beautiful trotter holds a stronq hand and it will not be at all surprisina to see him turn up trumps when the Campbell Handicap deal is shuffled. What other trotters, oreviously mentioned have achieved is quite within the range of the Gisborne horse.
