IN THE MARKET PLACE
FRUIT WELL SUPPLIED CHEAPER EGGS ' Auckland is well supplied with sea- : sonal fruits of all descriptions, and each Sydney boat brings further con- j signments of oranges and mandarins. The 18,000 cases of bananas which ] came to hand this week on the s.s. Tofua are meeting with a steady do- i mand. but until they ripen must make j little difference to retail prices. Ccok Island mandarins, even when the fact that they are packed in smaller cases is taken into consideration, are making considerably lower prices than the Australian product, packed attractively and having a better appearance. Limited holdings of coconuts are selling at about 18s a case. The cold weather experienced of late has undoubtedly affected the consumption, and apples and pears are meeting with a slow demand at lower values. Most varieties of field and garden produce are well supplied and meeting with a ready sale. Potatoes are firmer, and kumaras also tend to harden in value. Onions continue a drug on the market. Cabbages, cauliflowers and similar vegetables sell freely at values well within the reach of the average housewife. Table poultry, well supplied, is meeting with a good demand. Laying pullets command good prices, while large offerings of hens in the moulting stage sell at low values. Bucks are in short supply and realise firm values. Eggs are now offering in increasing supplies and the market has eased about Is a dozen for hens’ during the past fortnight. Farmers’ butter is firmer in price.
