CANTEEN FUND
NOT TO BE DISTRIBUTED DECISION OF BOARD In reply to a letter sent by Mr. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, in which he suggested to the Minister for Internal Affairs that the Canteen Fund should be distributed to ex-servicemen according to service, a communication has been received from the Canteen Board. Mr. W. Forgie, secretary to the board, replied that such a distribution would amount to only £3 10s for each of the 112 000 returned men. The cost of the distribution would be prohibitive Moreover the sum each man would receive would be too small to be of much use. In view of the work being done b\ Patriotic Societies to relieve distresiamong returned soldiers and depend ants, it was decided to keep the Can teen Fund for use when the societies* funds would be exhausted, which would be in about two years' time. Interest on the fund is being used to educate children of disabled soldiers and for the relief of unemployment under the scheme of the Returned Soldiers' Association.
