STAFF CUT DOWN
DEVGNPORT BOROUGH MANY MEN DISMISSED JpOLLOWING out a policy of retrenchment, the Devonport Borough Council has found it necessary to dismiss 46 employees. This has caused some friction. A sharp occurred at the ocuncil table on Wednesday when Mr. Massey wanted to know why a man who had been 12 years in the council s employ was “sacked” and a man with six months’ residence in the place was given the job. The casual men were the ones who were to be dismissed. The Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, said the engineer and foreman (who has been two years in the council’s employ) had been instructed to sort out the men and he moved that their selection be upheld. He was voted against by six to three. The Mayor then insisted that the council select who was to be “sacked” in place of the man to be reinstated, but several councillors declined to vote on. the merits of men unknown to them. As the Mayor persisted in demanding a vote three councillors voted for firing one named man and two voted for the contrary; five others declined to indicate opinions. The man to go is a married man.
