ON THE RUN!

COMMUNITY CARS PROPHECY COMES TRUE “FIFTY NEXT WEEK—PERHAPS” FULFILMENT of Mr. Harold Schmidt’s prophecy about 'Community Cars” on suburban routes has come sooner than had been expected. The cars, or rather one car, started to-day. The “General Transit Club” began its service, according to Mr. Schmidt, with a motor running from the post office to Mount Albert Road, on the Dominion Road route. By next week we will have a large number of cars, perhaps 50 on the run,” said Mr. Schmidt yesterday. “And there will be a two or three-minute service to Mount Eden and Mount Albert. The single car is now making about four trips an hour. “The club members will not pay a fare on the cars, but will tender what they like. Private cars, not taxis, will be used, and many unemployed men will be given work. It will not be an exclusive service, members of the public will be carried. “This car system will be merely the principle of, say 100 men running one motor-car to work and home again instead of 100 cars.”
