GISBORNE HARBOUR
HOPE NOT ABANDONED INNER BASIN POSSIBLE (.Special to THE SUN.) GISBORNE, To-day. Serious disquiet regarding the progress of its large undertaking led the Gisborne Harbour Board to obtain an investigation by Mr. F. W. Furkert, engineer-in-chief, who recently visited Gisborne, and inspected the works, and conferred with the board. His report has now come to hand, and was considered by a meeting of the board yesterday morning Generally speaking, the report is of a reassuring nature.
assuring nature, Mr. Furkert expressing the opinion that a satisfactory inner harbour, capable of accommodating vessels drawing up to 18 feet, can be provided with the balance of the funds available, simply by extending the existing breakwater and diverting the silt-laden Turanganui River, and developing the inner area. The report makes it clear, however, that the outer breakwater is the only means of providing a harbour capable of accommodating large vessels. The breakwater is impossible with the funds available, and the stone deposit at Whareongaonga is condemned by Mr. Furkert as too costly to work.
