Takapau Borough
The fortnightly meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor, Mr. J. Williamson, presided over a full council. A letter was received from the town clerk at Birkenhead advising that expenditure on a refuse destructor for Birkenhead 6 is unnecessary, and that the council cannot accept any liability on the matter until it has approved of the scheme. A copy of the letter has been forwarded to the medical officer of health, who has been advised that Takapuna and Devonport are prepared to proceed with the work.
The town clerk at Devonport wrote drawing attention to the state of O’Neill’s Point cemetery, requesting that the council should contribute towards the cost of improvements.—The matter was deferred to the Legal and Finance Committee.
The borough engineer advised that there is a debit balance of £2,000 on the East Coast Road metalling scheme. The engineer also recommended that urgent sewerage work should be carried out.
The council’s attention was drawn to the condition of the reclaimed land at Bayswater wharf. The town clerk was instructed to advise the Harbour Board forthwith.
Estimates for the completion of the following works were submitted by the engineer: Walter’s Hill. £3,120 19s: King Edward Avenue, £3.321; Northcote Road to Sherriff’s Bridge. £12,928.
The medical officer of health wrote concerning a rumour that had reached him to the effect that no further sewerage work was to be done. The town clerk was instructed to advise the medical officer that work is proceeding.
A by-law prohibiting pillion-ridine is to be drafted.
It was recommended that all borough supplies above the amount of £SO be subject to competitive tenders. Messrs. S. Vaile and Sons advised that owners of Smith’s Bush will give a two month option at £l5O per acre, the area being wanted as a reserve. The total cost would be about £4,072.
Legal advice was received re the liability of the council for heavy traffic fees. It was decided that a test case would be heard in court and that the Devonport Council, being in a similar position, should be asked to contribute towards expenses. Permission was granted to the Takapuna Municipal Band to hold a series of sacred concerts at fortnightly intervals.
A deputation from the Ex-service-men’s Club asked that favourable consideration be given for married returned soldiers. It was announced that this was being done. A permit was granted for the erection of a building to house the new electric pumping apparatus on Lake Pupuke.
A motion that the engineer be instructed to discharge all single men living outside the borough from all the works under his control, advanced by Cr. J. Davis, was amended by Cr. A. M. Gould to read “except where expert workers, who are single men, would be preferable.”
