Turf Notes
By “EARLY BIRD.”
Racing at Greenmeadows The Napier Park meeting is to be held at Greenmeadows on Saturday. The field in the Napier Steeplechase is a poor one, only six paying up, and a couple of these are also in the hack steeplechase. Hawke’s Bay Fixture Three days’ racing at Hastings will be held on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of next week. Weights for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club fixture and the Hunt Club gathering will not be announced until Monday, thus giving the handicapper a chance to witness the form at Greenmeadows. Racing at Trentham The Wellington winter meeting is to be held next month, and owners and trainers intending to do the fixture should bear in mind the fact that entries close on Monday night. Well Named Mr. Frank Ormond has selected the name of Tragic for the rising two-year-old full-sister to Gurnion (King Mark —Birkelot). As Birkelot was sired by Birkenhead (Orme —Tragedy), the appellation is in A manner appropriate. Cynic for Taranaki The other evening the Henry the First—Cynane horse Cynic arrived in \Vanganui from Gisborne. After a :ouple of weeks he goes on to Hawera, where he is to stand the season. Mr. W. Ballam has leased the English-bred horse, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles in 1919, from Mr. Gaine Carrington. Fordell Team for Trentham When the Wellington winter fixture at Trentham comes round next month, F. Tilley’s Fordell stable may be represented by Glenross, Shining Armour and Avro. Those who remember :he stable’s success at the Trentham gathering many years back with Kaniki, Kilrain and Kew will wish this t;rio similar luck. The three “K’s” started in six events and secured five firsts and a second. In Hiding Some horses ran in their wrong colours and others in colours so much alike that it was very difficult to tell one from the other, says a Dunedin writer. When colours bear a stroiig similarity owners should be compelled to use some distinctive cap. Some colours appear to be selected with the object of hiding a horse in a field and not for the purpose of identifying them. Big Rafa Rafa, whose erratic conduct at the starting barrier was the cause of his being placed on the schooling list, is now being used in the hunting field with the Taranaki hounds. He is conducting himself amenably in his new sphere. Rafa, by the way, is a halfbrother to Day Bell.
Prepared for Coup Rigoletto, who it was intended would be taken to Trentham next month to take part in the contest for the Trial Plate, will in all probability be an absentee, as all is not well with him at present. He was showing good form in his rehearsals, and that pointed to favourable results had he been able to have made the projected trip to the convincing grounds of the Wellington Racing Club next month. Crown Coin’s Schooling Crown Coin was sent over eight fences at Wanganui the other morning with C. Butler in the saddle and he shaped well. In the steeplechase events on the Hawke’s Bay circuit Crown Coin should give a good account of himself. If Break o’ Day does not get into the money on the trip he may not be persevered with. R. E. Thomson will ride Crown Coin and C. Butler will be on Break o’ Day in their engagements.
Not Guilty! In New Zealand, as in Australia, it is at times difficult to understand the amount of support in the betting for some more or less unknown animal. In Sydney the bookmakers are particularly well informed. Another example of this is shown by the following:—Even if those who report training work for the papers miss fast gallops done by any horse, or are unaware of its identity, fortunate indeed is the trainer who can spring a surprise on the betting ring. Pastmaster was not mentioned in the Metropolitan Press as having accomplished anything special at Randwick, but still he opened at a short price for the second division of the Newcastle Maiden Handicap, which merely emphasised an oft-expressed opinion that trainers have more to fear from trainers than from pressmen. Hawera Doings R. Morrison, who rode Rayo when he fell at Ellerslie, was taken to the hospital on Wednesday, and will be there for seven to ten days. He is suffering from concussion.
M. Conway had the misfortune on Saturday to have his collarbone broken by a yearling shying and falling on the road.
Taitaiata (Holman) and Bevis (Conway) gave a good display over three hurdles, Taitaiata jumping five steeplechase fences in good style. The local tracks are very quiet at present, as the older horses are resting and the young ones are just trotting about.
Enare, who ran a good race at Ellerslie, will next race at Trentham.
A well-known local owner missed purchasing Sir Kay at Ellerslie through a misunderstanding with his trainer. Sir Kay promises to turn out useful.
Lady Anstruther and Eka are having a month’s rest in the paddock. O Cox’s stable is having a bad time through the horses having severe colds. Helen was in a bad way, but is now on the improve.
