RETURNED SOLDIERS AND THEIR NEEDS
SUGGESTIONS TO GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Returned Soldiers’ Association Conference carried the following remits with little discussion: — Asking for a statement from the Minister of Lands as to the possibility «t the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlemut Act being reopened for housing far poses at an early date. Reaffirming the policy of the am ciation for the subdiyision of suitable areas of Crown lands when present leases are terminated. Protesting against the proposal « a section of farmers that preferssof to returned soldiers at land ballots be removed. That when a soldier is unable •» pay both principal and interest in but can pay interest, he may, at tie discretion of the Land Board, be lowed the usual rebate on interest Special recommendations *'*** adopted regarding the Ngaroma *** Kaihere soldier settlements. It was recommended that Sunt* African veterans be given the sMW privileges under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act as returned soldiers from the Great War. It was resolved, as regards hc-usuit that as repayments are made they be earmarked for loans for housing w soldiers who did not avail themselves of the privileges when the scheme wa* in force. The Government was urged to Et*K provision for disabled returned «®" diers by providing work as lift at'e““ ants, night -watchmen or messenger* in Governmen- departments.
