A TRIVIAL OFFENCE

CHARGE AGAINST MOTORIST WORKING ON SUNDAY (Special to THE SUN.) WAGANUI, Thursday. A case of interest to motor traders was heard in Court to-day. A motorist was charged with working at his calling on Sunday. He explained that he was returning a demonstration car to the owners with whom he had been formerly employed. The magistrate explained that the Act aimed at protecting the sentiment of various people, for instance, persons going to church on Sunday. No doubt they saw' a number of cars being driven about for pleasure, and no doubt had got used to them and would hardly have noticed the demonstration car of defendant. He considered the case on all-fours with that of a man who had given up business as a bookseller and who decided to do what a number of other people were on Sunday, and carry a Bible under his arm, although doing it for the purpose of returning it to the owners. No doubt he would be doing wrong, but in the circumstances the information was dismissed.
