OUTHWAITE PARK WORKS The usual fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presided. The engineer reported that the work on Outhwaite Park was being carried out well up to schedule time, although wet weather had hampered operations considerably. A letter was received from the Mt. Eden Borough Council stating that members of Parliament for Auckland suburban areas had been asked to meet representatives of local bodies, together with their traffic inspectors in order to discuss various suggestions Newmarket is to be represented by its Streets Committee. The borough’s share of the motorvehicle and drivers’ licence fees for the year ending March 31, amounting to £62, was received from the city treasurer.
The turncock’s report stated that 100 hydrant heads and 55 plugs had been delivered and were now being fitted. It was decided to purchase 500 feet of hose for the fire brigade. A suggestion that trees be planted in certain streets was referred to the Streets Committee.
A request from the Returned Soldiers’ Association to subsidise the amount collected in the borough on Poppy Day on the £ for £ basis was acceded to, £3O being donated. The Mayor tendered his congratulations to Mr. *F. J. O’Meara, a member of the council, who recently completed 43 years’ service with the Union Steam Ship Company.
