Coates, last night when speaking to the trade delegating from England. When the board set out in 19 « t Mr. Coates said, it took in over miles of road, and since then thistretch had been increased by 4 0 miles. The board itself had spent construction and other capital wo :- £1,200,000, which with the amonuts contributed by local bodies was rais, t to £1,600,000. In the three years the maintenac,,’ expenditure had totalled £ 1.400 im„ of which the board had spent £9OO and the local bodies proTicej £500,000. On the per mile basis man. tenance costs had been £ i 1.7 a mi , in 1325; in the following year £73* a mile, and in the year just closed approaching £ 100 a mile. Thu served to show the extraordinary pro. gress that was being made. Over the past three years some £6.000,000 had been spent on roads, both by Publ <■ Works and local bodies. “New Zealand is forging ahead” said Mr. Coates, “and compares fii\. ourably with any country of its sif - and it looks as if we are doing much as can reasonably be expected.”
