On the per mile basis man. tenance costs had been £ i 1.7 a mi , in 1325; in the following year £73* a mile, and in the year just closed approaching £ 100 a mile. Thu served to show the extraordinary pro. gress that was being made. Over the past three years some £6.000,000 had been spent on roads, both by Publ <■ Works and local bodies. “New Zealand is forging ahead” said Mr. Coates, “and compares fii\. ourably with any country of its sif - and it looks as if we are doing much as can reasonably be expected.”
