Appointing the Teachers
Paragraphs From The Education Board Although she was 61 last birthday, one lady applied for a teaching position. It was decided to put the name on the relieving list. * * * “People in the back-blocks deserve every consideration and we should endeavour to give it to them,” said the chairman, Mr. A. Burns, when applications for half-time schools at Apata and Aongata, Tauranga district, were before the board. * * * “We get very few applications of this sort. A teacher wants to leave the town for- the. country, and I think we should meet her if possible”—the chairman again. On Their Merits. —“Every application should be considered on its merits in future,” was the unanimous decision of the board, after the manner of an appointment had been considered. Two women teachers of equal grading applied for a position at Te Aroha. One name only was sent on to the committee, because one teacher had a longer country service than the other. The Act provided that the board might differentiate in favour of teachers with longer country service. Members declared that both names should have been sent in. Black List Wanted.—Mr. J. Patterson: I want to know something more about the appointment to Pukekohe. The teacher had declined Te Aroha a short time ago. School Inspector J. Rae: I didn t realise that this was the lady who declined Te Aroha. I consider hundreds of applications. Mr. E. C. Banks: You should keep a black list. “We have to send all the names to Wellington.” said the chairman.
