THE TILE INDUSTRY
There are three large tile-making factories in New Zealand, and that of Messrs. Wins tone, Ltd., at Taumarunui, is possibly the largest. At present the yards are holding stock to a value of £20,000, and the company is faced with the position of being forced to close down for an extended period if this accumulation cannot be moved wholly or in part. Such a course would have a serious effect on the unemployment position in the district, a 3 upward of fifty men and youths are in constant work on the premises. The Hon. R. P. Bollard attended the monthly meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce while in Taumarunui this week, and the matter was put before him, with a suggestion that if the Government could lodge with the firm an order for tiles for 150 cottages the company was prepared to keep going for two years. Among the list of Winstone’s annual payments was one of £19,000 for railway freights. Some assistance was needed. The Minister made no promise, but stated that he would bring the matter under the notice of the Hon. A. 11. McLeod on his return from Australia.
