HUMPHREY BISHOP CO
SHORT SEASON AT STRAND The Humphrey Bishop Musical Comedy Company, who have appeared before Auckland audiences on two prior occasions, are due for a short farewell season at the Strand, commencing on Friday next. During the forthcoming visit the company will appear twice daily, at 2.30 and 8 p.m., and a new and entirely different production will be given, their performance lasting one and a-half hours. The other half of the programme will be taken up with the Metro-Goldwyn feature film, “There You Are.” New lighting effects are being installed, and the company’s wardrobe mistress has been in Auckland for the past few days preparing new and elaborate frocking, and to ensure that no stone is left unturned to make the production have the same sparkle as when produced
at the recognised theatre. The infusion of new blood into the company has been a marked success. Among the newcomers is Mr. Arthur Hemsley, the well-known Lancashire comedian, Miss Joyce Staff, a talented New Zealand comedienne (for whom Mr. Bishop predicts a particularly brilliant future) and Miss Betty Burt, solo dancer, while. “Scratcher” Ross has three new and decidedly humorous “Scratcherisms.” The trials and tribulations of an eloping couple beset with tangled identities, and a misplaced baby which has been wished upon them, cause many laughs in “There You Are,” the splendid new comedy coming to the Strand Theatre on Friday. This is the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer screen version of the intensely funny novel by F. Hugh Herbert, the noted English novelist. The cast includes Conrad Nagel and Edith Roberts in the principal parts. George Fawcett, Eddie Gribbon, Gwen Lee, Phillips Smalley and Gertrude Bennett.
Warner Brothers • made good progress with the of the cast to support Syd. Chaplin in the Master Picture, “Nightie Night. Nurse,” which has already gone into production. Patsy Ruth Miller will play opposite Chaplin, while others in important roles are Gayne Whitman, Pat Hartigan. Edith Yorke and David Torrence. Charles (Chuck) Reisner is directing.
